Sydney's Heart

On March 5, 2014 Sydney Elizabeth began her fight with Severe Aplastic Anemia, a disorder where her bone marrow no longer produced blood cells. Her fight ended on August 26, 2014, when she went on ahead of us.

Sydney’s parents have been friends for over 20 years, fellow travelers with me in a music/missions group back in the 1990’s. Her mother, Heather, is a most vibrant, joy-filled signer for the hearing impaired and her father, David, is a regular local actor. Along with thousands of other people I followed their story from across the country, praying for a miracle. When this loss hit them it hit us all...but so has their hope.

“We do not grieve as those who have no hope...” 1 Thes 4:13

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.” Is 43:2

“My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life.” Ps 119:50

A month or two before the holidays David called and asked if I’d consider doing a painting, a Christmas gift for Heather. The subject was to be something very dear to their adaptation of a few pictures Sydney drew in the hospital in the midst of her fight. What an honor it was for me to peruse Sydney’s sketchbook, meditate on the verse David recommended as a theme, and ask God how I could possibly represent these precious themes.

The original painting hangs on a wall in the Lemon’s home but Sydney’s parents have given me permission to share her story and make “Sydney’s Heart” prints available for sale. All proceeds from this painting will go toward a cure for Severe Aplastic Anemia.

Contribute to finding a cure for SAA and remember to pray for this family every time you pass it on your wall.

Thank you David, Heather, and Sydney for allowing me share your family’s story.
